Bin Laden “blowing up” Facebook feeds

Facebook blew up on Monday, May 7th, as the news of Osama Bin Laden’s death was announced. Thousands of statuses, such as “Bin Laden regrets allowing his iPhone app to “use his current location”” and “Yep… Osama got Obama’d”, had blown  up peoples news feeds, along with the thousands of  photos and videos of the celebrations, that happened countrywide, of the elimination of the United State’s number one enemy.

Some people were overwhelmed by the excessive amount of posts, and had negative responses. But, the majority had responded by “liking” statuses and joining the new groups and fan pages, which have attracted hundreds of thousands of followers. There has even been a Facebook page made for Osama Bin Laden , which has been the attraction of many Facebook users.

I cannot say that I could imagine people speaking their minds as much as they have through their posts and statuses on Facebook and Twitter. The amount of pride coming from Facebook and Twitter users, was at an extreme on Monday night. People have become very expressive through there posts on Facebook and Twitter, saying things they probably wouldn’t say otherwise, for the whole world to see. Facebook and Twitter have opened the doors for people to say what is on their mind, and users are taking advantage of that open doorway.

The social network has improved communication and has increased the immediacy of news reaching the public view. Facebook and twitter feeds have also increased the spectrum of knowledge of Bin Laden’s death.

Many people were unaware of the of Osama Bin Laden’s death until they turned on their computer, and logged into their Facebook or Twitter account. I was one of the many who found out through Facebook, and then I turned on the news to watch the president’s address. But, if it wasn’t for Facebook, it wouldn’t have been so immediate.

Not all of the feedback from the death on Facebook has been positive though, I heard the news from Facebook, but, I have seen a lot of  problematic posts. Such as Spam, which has spread and continues to spread throughout the Facebook system. These posts are saying things such as, they have the footage of the fire fight, and they have the released pictures from the event, they usually are aided by this common photo shopped picture, of what is supposed to be the photo of Bin Laden dead. Once, one person clicks on the link, the link surges through to all of their friends, and then another person clicks, and another. So, be careful, be skeptical, and watch where you click.
